All moved in…and my first disaster

It’s been a busy few days…the weather cooperated this weekend, and moving went great.  I’ve been a little overwhelmed with all the stuff to do now (and oh yeah, my kids need lessons…and their papers graded…and for their teacher to be awake…), but I’ve been having fun arranging and sorting and putting away.

My first homeowner disaster occurred on Saturday.  I threw in a load of laundry — as I’ve said a couple times, one of the things I was looking forward to most about owning a home — and started putting away some dishes in the kitchen.  A little while later, I heard the sound of rushing water.  “Hmm,” I thought to myself.  “That does not sound like it is inside the washing machine.  In fact, it sounds like a river just started flowing through my basement.”  Sure enough, I glanced down the basement stairs and saw water gushing out of the Rubbermaid tub (yes, Rubbermaid tub) that holds the water draining from the rinse cycle until it’s pumped out.  I sloshed through, turned off the washer, and surveyed the damage.  After an hour of scooping dirty, sudsy, standing water into the largest available vessel (an empty cat litterbox) and a visit from my dad, we determined that the pump inside the Rubbermaid tub was not working.

So alas — no laundry for me for a while.  I’m hoping that a real life, professional plumber will be able to heal my poor washing machine and its strange, homemade pumping system.

In other news, two of my favorite aunts have been in town this week.  It’s been so fun to see them and show them around my house, and they and my mom are even going to paint my bedroom while I’m at school tomorrow!  They are all so, so nice to do that, and they rock a whole lot.  It is going to be painted a shade of white, but I can’t remember which shade, because looking at so many shades of what essentially is a non-color was slightly overwhelming.  I finally picked one and made them take away the chips so I couldn’t think about it anymore.  Here’s the “before” shot, by the way:

So shout-outs and many thanks to my mom, Aunt Jane, and Aunt Marie for their help.  I made them promise to take some pictures of their process so I can post them here.  I hope they wear matching coveralls.
